Traditional server architectures have a geographic problem: your server lives somewhere, your users live everywhere. Every request travels thousands of miles to your origin and back. Cloudflare Workers: V8 Isolates, Not Containers

Workers uses V8 isolates — the same sandbox that powers Chrome tabs — instead of containers or VMs. Isolates start in microseconds, not hundreds of milliseconds. There are no cold starts in the traditional sense. This architecture enables genuine sub-millisecond execution for lightweight functions and makes Workers uniquely suited for latency-sensitive workloads.

What Belongs at the Edge

Edge functions excel at request transformation, A/B testing routing, authentication and JWT validation, personalization header injection, and edge-side rendering with KV-backed data. They struggle with long-running computations, large binary processing, and any operation requiring persistent database connections — though Cloudflare D1 and Hyperdrive are rapidly closing those gaps.

KV, Durable Objects, and R2

Cloudflare's storage primitives each serve different use cases. KV is globally replicated key-value storage ideal for configuration and user session lookups — it's eventually consistent with predictable low latency. Durable Objects provide strongly consistent, single-instance coordination — perfect for real-time collaboration and websocket hubs. R2 is S3-compatible object storage with zero egress fees, making it an immediate cost winner for any high-traffic media serving use case.

Deploying Next.js to the Edge

Next.js supports edge runtime for individual routes — add `export const runtime = 'edge'` to any page or API route. This enables edge rendering with Cloudflare Workers when deployed via OpenNext or Cloudflare's official Next.js adapter, combining Next.js's routing and RSC capabilities with true global edge distribution.
